Transitioning to Prep at Mayfield

Transitioning to Prep at Mayfield

Starting school can be a very exciting time but it can also be a little bit stressful. At Mayfield State School we believe the process of transitioning to prep needs to occur over time. It needs to begin well before children start school and extend to the point where children and families feel a sense of belonging at the school.

Our Transition Program at Mayfield establishes positive relationships between the children, parents and educators. We want every family to feel connected to all of our staff and school community. By purposefully fostering connections between schools, kindergartens, other prior-to-school educators, families and community members, we are able to build open communication and trust and are best able to be ready for your child.

With this in mind you are welcome to participate in as many of our Transition activities as possible. The ones with a star are the activities especially designed to prepare your child for prep and to help us get to know your child. The other activities are Mayfield events that we would love you to attend so that you can become a member of our community.

Preparing for Prep 2019 Information evening.

20 March 2019 5.30pm - 6.30 pm

Easter Bonnet Parade. Each year Mayfield holds an Easter Bonnet parade where each student makes their own Easter Bonnet. Then as a whole school we gather, so class by class the students get to parade their beautiful creations. This year we would love to see some of our pre-prep students and playgroup members participate as well. The Easter Bonnet parade will be held on  5th April 2019 9.00am

Under 8s Day. During this morning our students from years prep to 2 are involved in a variety of hands-on and fun activities to celebrate being ‘under 8’. Our playgroup, pre-prep and their carers students are invited to take part in these fun activities as well. This is a great way for students to not only become familiar with the school, but to also meet some current students and establish some friendships.  Our under 8's day will be held on  24th May 2019.  10-11am

*Classroom Open morning. This is a time for children to experience what it feels like to be in a classroom and an opportunity for parents to meet teachers and principals, tour the school and observe how a prep classroom is organised. Our open morning will be held on 3 Spetember 2019 9 - 10.30am.

*Prep Enrolment Interviews. These are formal interviews that take place in October, before we create classes for 2019 . During these interviews the pre-prep students will spend time with an early years teacher and parents will have a one-on-one interview with the principal or deputy principal. These interviews are a very important way for us to make sure we can support your child’s needs when we are placing students in class groupings. Our interviews will be held on the  22 October 2019

*Transition Day. Our final transition activity for the year is our Transition Day. On this day all classes in the school spend the morning transitioning to their class for next year. The pre-preps spend this time with their prep teacher. They practice sitting on the carpet, going to the toilet, eating their lunch and playing on the playground. They will also meet their buddy for next year, while parents hear some final words from our Principal and Deputy Principal.  Transition Day will take place on the 10th December 2019
Future Preps 10-11.30am.

As a school we believe it is essential for us to have strong relationships with our kindergartens and pre-prep providers. Throughout the year we regularly meet for events where we can learn from each other and share important information about our programs and students. We hope you can participate in our Transition Program and look forward to getting to know your family this year.
