Through meaningful digital experiences, students will develop the skills to think critically, collaborate effectively, solve problems, and communicate in ways they aren’t able to without digital technologies which will prepare them for an ever-changing world. Technology will be used as a tool to support curiosity, independence, innovation, and lifelong learning both inside and beyond the classroom.
BYO iPads at Mayfield State School
At Mayfield State School, our iPad Program begins in Year 4, providing students with the opportunity to develop the digital skills, confidence and independence they need for learning in the upper years of primary school and beyond.
The introduction of iPads in Year 4 supports the intentional integration of digital literacy and technology across teaching and learning. As students progress through Years 4–6, they use technology purposefully to research, create, communicate, collaborate, problem-solve and demonstrate their learning across the curriculum.
Beginning the program in Year 4 allows students to progressively develop the skills required to become safe, responsible and capable digital learners. Rather than technology being an add-on, iPads become an integrated tool that enhances learning and provides students with greater opportunities to engage with content, personalise their learning and demonstrate their understanding in different ways.
The program also plays an important role in preparing students for the transition to high school. Students develop increasing independence in managing digital learning, organising their work, using online platforms, creating digital content and applying critical thinking when navigating digital environments.
Our goal is for every student to leave Mayfield with the digital literacy, learning habits and confidence to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
Equipment for the program
Keyboard case - While the on-screen keyboard is a good option for shorter sessions, a physical keyboard offers a level of speed, accuracy, and tactile feedback that an on-screen keyboard lacks. It also helps prepare students for high school and is a required item for students sitting NAPLAN.
Stylus Pen – This enhances learning by allowing primary students to write, draw and interact with their iPad more naturally than using a finger. It supports handwriting development, mathematical problem-solving, annotating digital texts and
worksheets, and encourages creativity through drawing, designing and visual
note-taking.
Department of Education alignment
As part of the department’s Brighter Futures Strategy, ‘digital innovation and responsive systems’ is a shared priority. The staff at Mayfield State School work to incorporate digital technologies for a more inclusive approach to teaching and learning while equipping students with the skills to demonstrate their learning in more meaningful and relevant ways. This is through enabling and enhancing our current ways of teaching.
